Introduction

"Yoga is not an ancient myth buried in oblivion. It is the most invaluable inheritance of the present. It is the essential need of today and the culture of tomorrow." (Swami Satyananda Saraswati)"

The statement of Swami Satyananda Saraswati decades ago is surely taking shape today as more and more people are taking to Yoga both in the East and West.  One of the six darshanas or systems of philosophy originating in India , Yoga appeals because of it universality and non religious foundation.

What is Yoga?

The word Yoga  comes from the Sanskrit word “yuj” meaning “to join”. The union of the individual consciousness with the universal consciousness is termed yoga. The great sage Patanjali who has described yoga in his aphorisms commonly know as “Patanjali yoga Sutras" has given this definition ”Yogaschittavritti nirodha” translated loosely as “Yoga is stilling the modifications of the mind”. Several other definitions are also given but for lay persons like us Yoga is a achieving a balanced and fulfilling  life by harmonising our body , thoughts and emotions and gradually enjoying a higher level of consciousness.
